Backcountry Planning AIARE Level 2 Nic Isgrig
For my backcountry plan I have chosen low angle terrain in Ashcroft. This is a wintertime ski tour that avoids avalanche terrain. The areas that I have closed off with the polygon are slopes that are steeper than 30 degrees. These slopes are safe in the springtime with a mature snowpack but not during winter. Given the current conditions of about 4 new feet of snow in february and a new storm arriving by the weekend I’ve made the choice to ski areas only under 30 degrees. New snow means instabilities up high. My tour plan is to stay in the gladed areas and the low angle wide open alpine terrain. Given the mid winter stability it is very important not to get too close to overhead hazards and watch all avalanche paths closely. This limits the terrain we can safely ride although there are options out there which are low angle.
