In Sep 2024 I summited Red Peak from the South, and then scrambled down to Willow Lakes to camp, exiting to Willowbrook trailhead the next day (https://caltopo.com/m/KHEMANU).
This map is a more perfect version of that send -- a product of lessons learned.
TLDR; 2 nights. Start with the Willow Lakes (opposite my direction). Water is heavy. Bring a friend.
Lesson 1: This is NOT a 1-nighter.
Red Peak involves too much climbing and descending to safely tack onto an already long access hike, especially with an overnight pack.
Lesson 2: Descending steep, unmarked terrain is dangerous and scary.
There is no trail between Red Peak and Willow Lakes. I followed the Western ridge down to the North, through some class III+ maneuvers. My pack was a bulk issue at the crux, and a weight issue on the 35+deg scree scramble that followed. Ascending this instead would be strenuous climbing, but much more safe.
Lesson 3: Water is heavy.
Use alpine lakes to fill water bottles, and don't pack too much. My legs hated me for the 4 liters I brought on day 1, where I could have filled up along the way instead.
Lesson 4: Don't do it alone.
There will be nobody else on the stretch between Willow Lakes and Read Peak. A relatively minor leg injury could have stranded me, and the exposure could have killed me.
